Where do you currently live? Do you live by yourself? (if you live with somebody: what is it like to have Joey Mantia as a roommate?)
Colorado Springs, CO at the Olympic Training Center ; I have a room mate ; To have me as a roommate is to never see me haha I travel so much that he practically has the room to himself
What car do you drive?
2006 acura TL
Favorite Movie?
Inglorious Basterds
Favorite music?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Nas lately
Where you a good student in school?
Good is an interesting adjective, placed in a an open ended question… if you’re asking if I got good grades, then the answer is yes; I was never allowed to get a C, and ended up graduating with highest honors, 8th in my class. If you’re asking if I was well behaved, ehhh, I never got into too much trouble, but I liked to have fun.
What are your hobbies besides skating?
Riding the motorcycle is one of my favorite things to do- but it kind of ruined my training when I first got it because I realized how fast I could go without having to break a sweat haha. Im glad that wore off.
What do you like to do on days off of skating or what does a typical off day look like?
Usually I only have one full day off from training each week and it usually consists of me laying around the room and relaxing- seems boring, but when you’re on the go all the time, you appreciate the down time when it comes along
If you wouldn’t have been a professional speed skater, what do you think you would have ended up doing for life?
Probably would have dropped out of school and picked up a crazy drug addiction, selling my body to buy my next fix… just kidding haha… I probably would have went to college for computer engineering or web design and now I would be out in the real world working that 9-5 like most people (yuck)… im glad I do what I do
I heard you where in gymnastics, where you as competitive as in speed skating? Achievements?
Well I could do handstands like a champ! I only attended class 5 times, my instructor was a huge jerk so I called it quits.
What do you see yourself doing after your skating career? Would you like to stay involved as a coach, product engineer, marketing a brand…?
There’s no telling what the future holds. I just recently helped my buddy start a project called National SpeedSkating Circuit www.pronsc.com – it’s a professional indoor circuit that will bring the sport to mainstream America. It’s probably something I’ll be heavily involved in long after my skating career is over. I want to own my own businesses; not sure which kind yet, but I do know that I never want to have to work for someone else. I could see myself coaching eventually as well.
Alone on an island for one month, which 3 things would you like to have with you?
A boat, a gps, extra gas (just in case) haha UNLESS I CAN HAVE eva mendes, 30 days worth of sushi, & sweet tea
With your new website ” journal of a Champion”, are you not concerned that soon everybody will have the size of legs that you have?
Haha not really, there’s a lot more to it than having big legs. It’s just a cool way for me to be able to look back and see what ive done for the year or month and I can do it from anywhere… I can update it from anywhere, its just a really good training tool so why not share it?
What is your advise to skaters that will try to do the exact same thing as in your training journal?
Don’t. I eat like crap, if you’re going to follow it, get a better diet than me haha
which 5 skaters do you think will be your hardest competitors (international races) in 2010?
Diego rosero- the guy has a motor that doesn’t give up
Yan Guyader – he also has a motor on him
Nayib Tobon – one of the best field sprinters in the WIC now
Andres Munoz – a lot of heart, even more speed perhaps
Pedro Causil – young and HUNGRY- dangerous combo
How do you see the future of Speed Skating in developments of equipment? 4 X 120mm, 3 x 150mm, floating skates…?
You’re asking the wrong guy there. I hope we keep the same set up forever, it works for me haha
What advise would you give to fellow competitors or kids looking up to you?
Train hard, remember that technique is the most important aspect of what we do… don’t be afraid to succeed
Any last words you would like to say from yourself?
It’s 1:48am and im hungry, so im going to burger king- see I told you my diet is garbage
